Spam, what's your view ?

Posted in : Spam Trap

Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm anal or something, but I absolutely detest spam. I suppose I should start by telling you my definition of spam :-

Spam is any form of advertising, be it telesales, leaflets through your door, emails or pop-ups that are unsolicited

90% of the telephone calls that I receive are telesales, I have never bought/subscribed to anything that telesales has offered me. In fact they are so ignorant that I now receive letters and telesales for "Mr Peter Pan" because I decided to take the piss out off one of them! About the same sort of percentage of the letters that come through my door are also adverts, or loan/credit card application forms (quite a few of them are addressed to Mr Pan, I really should find out where he lives :|), these are literaly taken out of the letterbox and put straight in the bin unread (however, I have to wait til the "peasants delivery", which arrives several hours later, to get mail I actually want !)

I'm slightly luckier with my email, although I do get hounded by a displaced Yank called Scott, which kind of waters down the spam ratio, but between the forums I'm a member of and all the email addresses I manage, I still end up with a buch of offers for viagra (I have a girlfriend with abilities :|), or cheaper printer ink (I don't own a printer), or cheap rolexes (I don't even know what year it is, why the hell do I want to know the time ? :|) and other crap like that. I think the most entertaining one was from a company that said they could "improve my websites image with a logo" as they were "experts in my websites area"......... damn shame they never took the time to actually look at my website and see that it was an art gallery and had a perfectly good logo, not to mention the fact that it was coded a damn site better than their own pitiful site (complete with crap logo).

So, the "anal about it" bit, I'm seriously starting to think that I may be. I've not only got a custom anti-spam module running on these blogs, I have, before now, be known to join a buch of porn sites using spammers email addresses (lol, bet they have an interesting time with their inboxes now), and now I've gone to the extent of starting my Spam trap.

The concept is simple, every time I get an email advertising a site selling viagra or rolexes or any other shit that I didn't request, I'm going to visit the site and any email addressess that I find on the site will be added to my spam trap. As most people are aware the people who actually offer these services have programs (called bots or spiders) that trawl the web looking for email addresses to add to their databases. So sooner or later the addresses on the spam trap will get into their system and these people will receive a taste of their own medicine.

Anal huh? I get worse, I've also added a link to the spam trap to all of my forum signatures and to every website that I manage, and I'll also add it to every site I code in the future. I'll also actively seek for people to link to the page just so they find the email addresses easier!.

So, am I anal ? I'd be very interested to hear about your views on what you see as spam and how you feel about it, especially if you're actually in favour of spam !

Yep ... SPAM sucks. Both the kind that comes in a can and the kind that can arrive in your inbox. My method? Tie them up ... If it's a telemarketer, I say, "Hang on, I'll get the [homeowner/my dad/the landlord]," then just wait. Then in 30-seconds, I'll pick up the phone, "Have they answered. No? Okay ... wait, they said 'just a minute'," then put the phone down again.

I figure the longer I can keep them pre-occupied along false lines, the worse their time/sales ratio will be.

Email spam ... yuck. What really gets me there is when the SPAM gets through (say a Yahoo! filter), but my REAL MAIL doesn't.

Seems like a good idea ¥åßßå . I hope that lots of people sign up. Give them a taste of their own medicine.

Lately, I've been getting a lot of those Nigerian sob story letters. You know the ones: "Dear beloved, I'm a poor widow and my husband's money is tied up at a Nigerian bank. It's worth millions of dollars, but I can't get it out without your help. Please send your bank information (so I can rob you blind) you can help me. Your portion will be huge and I'm only giving this because you are so helpful".

What a crock!

Go get'em ¥åßßå !!

Just like to point out that the stage show based on Monty Python's 'The Holy Grail' is called Spamalot and has won a raft of awards, so not all spam is bad!!!!;)

Scott,
Lol, it's because I decided to take the piss out of one telesales that I now get a load of crap in the name of Peter Pan ;) I'm with you though, if I can be bothered I keep them on the phone as long as possible just to waste their resources.

The piece about signing up is for people who would like to recieve a daily random link from Nicks search engine (I really don't expect any takers, it's their to prove a point - people do not want spam, unfortunately spammers really wont get the message).

If you want to help my spam trap then just copy and paste the code from the spam trap page onto your blog/website and it'll be one more link to the list for spammers bots/spiders to find. If you want to implement a similar page on your blog/website then let me know and I'll send you a copy of the code.

Cheryl,
Lol honey, just one of the few decent flavours of spam left in the universe ;)

¥åßßå -

Just a note to let you know I'm going anal too. I've linked to your spamtrap.php and can offer up my own version: http://randsco.com/blogs/skins/rands/_greenEggs.php

I'm calling it "SpamBack" (Green Eggs & Spam) ... choke on THIS you >:XX's.

You might also want to check out http://spampoison.com (as a link there could only help)!

Anyway ... I'm gonna write a post about it all, but if more people create their own 'SpamBack' php/html file, each one of which links to a few other SpamBack files ... the spammers will soon be choking on their own poisoned pill.

I've also taken to reporting some of the more egregious spam mailings to www.spamcop.net.

Somehow now, regarding spam, I'm feeling much happier! Bring on the Viagra ads. Harvest the email on my site! Go ahead, I'm waiting. (For the moment, anyway, I'm actually looking forward to receiving spam.)

Good God, man, look what you started.

Spam Spam Spam, hated it in the tin form and not too keen on the version which doesn't effect my tummy!

I had a great example over a month ago, had just one week off work, I came back to 258 emails, of which 3 were work related! As someone who works with Digital Marketing I understand the legal aspect of permission based email marketing, what I cannot understand is the p0rn related cr@p which flows through my inbox - this is a business email account which is often checked by management!

It seems the current Spam trend is related to Stocks and Shares, at least 30 a day fly through my inbox, a total waste of resources as soon as it appears in my inbox it goes straight into my deleted files. I am tempted to work out exactly how many hours a year I spend cleaning out my inbox and then start a legal case for compensation - perhaps this website could instigate something?

I agree with you, and I'm fed up with altering web/blog software to cope with the ever increasing amount of junk i'm getting, some of it highly offensive even to a broad-minded guy like myself.

A bit of research showed that the majority of my spam originated from China and often occurred after a "visit" to my web site. Weeks of emailing abuse@somechinesedomainthatdoesntcare and getting ignored prompted me to take the only course of action: I wrote a PHP script that detects a visitor's IP address and simply redirects any Chinese visitor to a bandwidth-sucking web page over at aa419.org :-) Simple and effective.

Next step is to write a mailchecker that will read the POP3 mailbox and delete any spam that originates from specific locations..

SPAM is a sticky one and no mistake. I found out last week that Hotmail uses expired accounts that aren't reclaimed within 6 months as SPAM trap addresses. This causes a bit of an issue for people sending out legitimate e-mails - if you had a customer a year ago with a Hotmail account who actually did sign up for your mailing list (yes, belive it or not, there are legitimate e-mails with commercial topics!) then you'll start getting flagged as a spammer. Aparaently most of the bbig mail providers operate similar policies. Anyhows, upshot for me is to remove any e-mail address that gets a 550.

That's a tad of a bitch!

I agree that there are several non-spam emailers out there, it's just a shame that they're tarred with the same brush as the arses that do spam.
