Pond pumps - the continuing saga

Posted in : Pond Pumps

Note : I don't sell pond pumps! If you're looking for a pond pump then visit the Pond Pumps section of my mates online aquatics shop ;).

First the good news, the google results for pond pumps have now dropped to 780,000 (which makes my task a tad easier), and my blog is already somewhere in the results!!! Google : pond pumps +yabba, of course that could mean I'm 780,000th but at least I'm in there already.

The reason behind pond pumps

Ok, maybe I should explain a tad more about what this is all about.

As I mentioned in my first post on this subject, my friend (who runs an online aquatics business) is anal about his position in google for the search term "pond pumps", he spends hours making minescule adjustments to his page just so that he stays the top of the google rankings for pond pumps. As I (obviously) have a tad of interest in computers, programming and the web, we often end up in discussions about what he does and why.

Now, don't misunderstand me, my friend has an extensive knowledge about how google works and what it likes/dislikes about websites (or at least, he has extensive knowledge what it likes/dislikes about aquatics websites), and he spends days on end making sure that his page is as perfect as he can make it........and he must be doing something right because he is number one for pond pumps and has been for quite a while.

So, where do I come into it? During one of our many discussions regarding search engines and google in particular, I happened to bring up the subject of blogs, and how search engines love them because they have ever changing content, using my own blog which went to a page rank four within weeks of being launched, and now comes top of google for several search terms (lol, not all of them desired), purely because it is a blog, as an example of what I meant.

A tad further into the discussion this led to "I honestly wouldn't be suprised if a blog came top of google for pond pumps, purely because it is a blog".......the response was "bollocks". Which I took as "proove it" (well, I'm blonde and we have difficulty with understanding complicated words :p)....and so this is my endeavour to do so.

Now, in all fairness I do have to admit that I have several advantages over my mate, which are :-
1/ I can code, therefore I can make my blog do things that he can't make his website do, like putting my content at the top of the code so that search engines rate it as more important.

2/ To a degree, I don't have to worry about my blog posts looking professional, so I can do things like putting

Pond Pumps

in huge text, and get away with it.

3/ I get trawled far more often than he does by googlebots.

4/ My blog is linked to on all the forums I'm a member of, and on every blog on Waffles On, and on every website that I've coded........ ohh yeah, and on every page of another friends search engine.

5/ My blog. As I said, search engines like blogs because they have ever changing content.

Now, it sounds like I should wipe the floor with my friend huh? Life's never that easy, he also has several advantages :-
1/ He's knowledgable about his own website and how google reacts to any changes that he makes.

2/ He also has several domains on the web that he uses to his advantage.

3/ He's been number one in google for quite a few years

4/ He hasn't got 780,000 positions to climb!!

So, how do I rate my chances? Fair to middling, I'd be happy to get within the top 10 results, but I'm really aiming at the top spot. It could of course take me a tad, but there again SEO on any site would take a tad to show any result as well, and I'm not really trying to get there by any normal SEO methods, I'm just going to blog about pond pumps on a regular basis.

So, onwards and upwards, see you at the top,

Ok, I understand what you're trying to do here but is there no way you can 'sex' the subject up a bit? I mean, as it stands, Pond Pumps are..............well, let's just say that they don't rock my world! ;)

Hmmm ... you are definitely a professional bimbler!

However, #1 on my Google search for "pond pumps", yielded a certain "Pond Supply for garden ponds & water garderns, pond pumps, pond..." (www.pondmarket.com)... [ACK ... which just gives it ANOTHER link] ... but it's in St. Louis, MO (USA).

The first UK seems to be #4 on my list (Aquatics Warehouse) ... and just to be fair (www.aquatics-warehouse.co.uk). --> Is that the one?

Hmmm. Went to page 10 looking for a waffleson URL, but gave up after that. You've got your bimbling work cut out for you.

As you might have guessed, we're back from our family visits. Hotter than a 'mo in California (why did we leave the great white north? remind me again?) We all had a good time visiting relatives and Alex has pretty much decided that ice cream is a pretty good main course (much preferred over most everything).

Cheers,

-stk

Damn Scott, stop spamming my blog :|

The reason for the different results is because the search is on google.co.uk (google in it's infinite wisdom redirects to your local google based on your ip).

Also, google only returns the top 1,000 results, so until I climb a few hundred thousand pages for the

pond pumps

keywords I won't know where I am.

I'll no doubt read all about your holiday on your blog ;)
