Well I finally got round to upgrading InnerVisions to the latest version of b2evolution, mainly because it was getting a tad of a ballache developing plugins on my test blog and then constantly having to redo the zip files, something which is automated via my credits page for installed plugins. This is just stage one of the upgrade though, the next step is to integrate my blogrum with the rest of the InnerVisions network. Once again this is going to involve merging two different evo installs complete with all the users, posts, comments and groups ... not made any easier by the fact that the two installs share some users as well .... ah well, it'll be worth it when it's finished .... at least, that's what I keep telling myself ;)
One of the plugins that I'm currently playing with allows you to customise your dashboard to suit your own tastes, it even allows you to add widgets to your dashboard, be warned though, not all widgets play nice on all dashboard tabs .... you can easily tell, they normally barf out with fatal errors ... if they do then just remove them from your dashboard huh? Another cool feature is the ability to drag 'n' drop the widgets into the order that you want instead of the normal "click arrow" ..... "wait" ..... "click arrow" .... you get the picture. If anyone's interested in it then you can read a smidge more on the blogrums ( Experimental : Playing with admin ), don't bother downloading the linked zip though, it's already out of date, you can grab the latest version from here ( AM Deluxe Dashboard ). I will be making a more detailed post about it once it's nearer to a release version ;)
The chances are that this upgrade has screwed summat up somewhere, so if you find anything funky then just let me know .... assuming that the funkiness isn't to do with my anti-spam measures, in which case you might find yourself accidentally banned for a couple of hours ...... guess you'd need to grab me on the forums or my blogrum. When I get chance I'll be removing most of my current anti-spam stuff and replacing it with my Irish Captcha as it's pretty good at telling humans from bots without any hoops for the humans to jump through ;) ... the bright side is that my comment form should actually be able to remember visitors names for them after that :p

tuxnus:yabba_hh: unluckyJust spent about a week making a new template for my companys newsletter. Guess what? CSS is hardly supported by email clients, both on and offline. Notably gmail, which has nearly no support at all.
So I have to redesign the whole thing in tables. AAAAAAARRRGHHH!!!
So there are times when tables still have to be used.
'Die Tables Die' indeed!
Ed
yabba_hh: I suppose this isn't the time to tell Ed that all my emails are "plain text" only, so shit like "my comments are in blue" tiotally fail?
tuxnus: which is why i italicized them
tuxnus: (for the color-impared)
yabba_hh: and you managed to do that in plain text by ....... ?
tuxnus: well, yer a moron
yabba_hh: lmfao
tuxnus: read (a most unusual character)
tuxnus: unique
yabba_hh: uhuh
tuxnus: odd
tuxnus: eccentric
tuxnus: weird
tuxnus: obtuse
tuxnus: cryptic
tuxnus: one of a kind
yabba_hh: as opposed to "of course italics will work if plain text format is all his client accepts and he can't see my colour"
tuxnus: I thought they would
yabba_hh: fuckin' muppet

The good new is that they're running Wordpress 2.3.3 which is exploitable ... so now the spammers are gonna have their blogs spammed by the spammers .... kinda poetic really.
I stumbled across this site ( http://blogs.pi.edu/ ... no link love for you biatch ) whilst I was wandering around the web. It's a dot Edu which has opened it's doors to the public and allows them to create their very own .edu blog for a mere $50 a month. That's right, for the princely sum of $50 the spammers can now have a blog on one of the most respected TLD's on the web ..... no longer do they need to search for obsolete .edu message boards to fill with their crap they can have their own shiny sub domain to play with
Perish the thought, they're totally against spam, you can tell just by reading their TOS :
PI.edu is a community specifically created for webmasters involved in educating the public about their websites and the products and services that they offer.
To maintain the high standards of this community, we have some simple requirements to administrate a blog on the PI.EDU network.
*** Keep your blog family friendly
***No Porn related Blogs
***No blogs promoting casino gambling
***No RX blogs promoting sites that sell drugs in the US without a PERSONAL doctor’s prescription.
***Your blog must contain original educational content that teaches and educates readers.
***Your blog may not present untrue data in order to mislead readers.
***No Link Farm Blogs.
***PI.EDU has the right to terminate your monthly membership if we feel your blog is detrimental to the PI.EDU blog community.
***If you discontinue payment for your blog, PI.EDU has the option to keep the blog up and running.By ticking the box below you agree to follow this TOS and agree to any decisions PI.edu makes concerning whether your blog is a good fit for our community.
Cool now I feel reassured .... if only it wasn't absolute bollocks ..... a cursory glance over the blogs that have already been set up will show you that it's soon gonna be a full blown spam source ... no worries though, because at least it'll be educated spam huh?

Skiddie : I've tried all the DLL exploits possible and I still haven't r00t3d this box
SpamHound :It's a linux box you dumb arse. Your IP has been banned for stupidity
The chances are that if you're a skiddie then instead of seeing this you're seeing a page that reads something like "Forbidden : SpamHound has detected your IP as belonging to a spammer. Your IP address has been blocked from all SpamHound protected sites until ##/##/####". Don't take it to personally as the SpamHound doesn't really think you're a dumb arse Spammer, it realises that you're an even dumber skiddie that's been looking for exploits on the server, it just treats all IQs below 1 in the same way.
The good news is that the skiddies prompted me to do some more work on the SpamHound to include checks for these dumb arses, and whilst I was tempted to link all such requests to a virus or just redirect them to 127.0.0.1, in the end I decided to just ban them, which is a lot less fun but they're not even worth playing with. The recode not only added the ability to detect the lower IQs on the web but also reintroduced the ability to network multiple servers/domains so that they can share the same information, you hit one you get your sorry arse banned from them all.
At this moment in time the new version of the Hound only protects this server, although it's due to be rolled out to another few servers in the very near future, once we've done some multi-server testing and gained a few more stats 'n' stuff. Then I'm going to be working on a public version of the Hound, it won't be half as ferocious as our own but it should help cut down on the bandwidth and cpu that gets wasted on spammers and skiddies on a daily basis and I'll probably tie it in with a b2evolution plugin that will allow you to ban IP addresses direct from your admin pages. We already have a working version of the plugin so it won't take much to make it a publicly available release, assuming anybody's interested in it
So far the various versions of the Hound have stopped over half a million spam/skiddie attempts, not bad for a bunch of code huh? I'd be able to give you the exact figures but I had a blonde moment when coding the log analyser and accidentally wiped the logs for the last couple of months  ahh well, they'll soon build up again as these arses really don't understand "403 : Your shit is forbidden". It'll be interesting to watch that figure soar as the new version is rolled out.
Anyway I suppose it's time I went and did some more testing so it can be unleashed on our network
