April was a tad of a busy month for spammers, in total our blog system received over 19,200 spam comments which were pushing 287 blacklist urls, an average of almost 90 pieces of spam for each of the urls. The busy day of the week for spam was Saturdays (a total of 3,477 spam), followed by Thursday (2,828) and Tuesdays (2,778).
As you can see from the chart on the left, spam traffic increased dramatically towards the end of the month. The heaviest stream was from the 25th to the 27th, during which time we received 3,990 spam. They also seem to be at their most prolific from midnight to 1am and 8pm to 9pm (GMT).
Whilst all of these figures look scary, you have to remember that I've basically neutered the built in antispam protection for our blogs. If you're running a [b2evo] blog then these are the sorts of numbers that it protects your from, albeit with a blacklist that's 10 times the size of the SpamHounds. The main advantage we have is the fact that the SpamHound can also detect new spammers and add them to it's list automatically. As I mentioned at the beginning, it's pretty effective, we've had less than a dozen spam get through since it's been running.
These figures are only for comment spam, I have trackbacks and pingbacks turned off as they're a magnet for spammers. When I recode the SpamHound I'll be writting in protection for these so I'll be turning them back on. I'm damn sure that'll show a massive increase in the number of spam we receive.
